What a great time we had for the last tournament of the season. The weather was sunny and well into the 60′s all day.

We decided to dedicate the last tournament of the season to all our sponsors that are a great help to put tournaments together. More importantly, the players who show up regularly during the year are what makes the club and the sport keep climbing.

For that last tournament more than 26 people showed up early for that doublettes carousel.  Everyone got to play with a different partner during the first three games. Only the best 8 would qualify for the playoffs.

Also some people showed up during the afternoon to play in the consolante and some pick up games.

A special mention will go to Kebir, Nounou and Mohammad who came from Boston for the occasion. You guys deserve a big high five. See you in Amelia Island!

In the end the winners that go home with prizes were;

Emile who won the shooting contest and got home with a brand new Nespresso coffee machine!

Mohammad and Dave K finished 4th of the main tournament.

Jeannot and Charly were 3rd.

Emile and Philippe finished 2nd.

And the winners were Joel and Ernesto!

In the consolante part Steve, Bruce and Bill finished 3rd.

Lucien, Paul and Rafique landed 2nd.

And the winners of the consolante were Nounou, Bert and Yngve!

On Sunday October 23rd, 2011 we will have our last tournament of the year, a Triplette Carousel with many prizes!

The Star Masters New York Pétanque Club wants to thank its sponsors through this tournament.

We will also run a precision shooting contest during the day. The first prize will be a Nespresso coffee machine (value estimated at $250) and the second will get two bottles of Armagnac Chateau de Laubade.

UPDATE : Because of  the hurricane Irene that will touch New York this weekend we have to cancel this tourney. The tournament will take place the following Saturday September 3rd, 2011.

Timing problems forced us to change this Sponsor Day tournament (which will now take place on October 16th).

Instead, we will have a Select Doubles Tournament with medals and $$ prizes.

We will also run a precision shooting contest the whole day. New format: 1 boule in the middle of the circle to shoot from 6,7,8 and 9 meters, and again from 6 and 7. Total 6 boules for a maximum of 33 points (if you shoot 6 carreaux it will be 30 points plus a bonus of 3 points because you did not miss a boule. Boule shot and out of the circle 3 points. Nothing else.)

$5 will buy you 6 boules to shoot and you can buy as many times as you want. We will select the top four shooters for a 6 boules semi final and final before the Doubles’ final. $100 to the winner.

The weather forecast states we should be fine under the big trees.

NYPC enjoyed a great picnic for the last Sunday of July.
Great food and great company with perfect weather….what else would you want?

22 players  showed up to play in a mélée Caroussel tournament format.

After two games in the morning, it was time to get the multiple dishes that all participants brought, including the “now famous” Deviled Eggs from Jeannot.

Tons of good food and wine were shared by all before resuming the concours (although some had requested some time for a nap!) After the 3rd game, the top 8 players met for the last drawing of the day.

In the final Steve and Paul beat JPS and Thiam….and it was time for one more drink before going home.

A glorious day after all. Thank you all for coming!

First practiced in New York City in the 1930s (Pilate 2005, 109–10), the bowling game petanque has become visible in the public spaces of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Queens, next to frisbee, badminton, volleyball, and tai chi. Today, this urban game is played by players of French origin (binational and expatriate), French-speaking immigrants of African origin, and increasingly numerous English-speaking players. This article uses ethnographic data I collected in 2009 and 2011 to describe petanque play in New York City, including different playing areas, the history of local petanque clubs, the hot moments of the annual calendar, ordinary practice, and the personal journeys and motivations of the players.

Dear Members,

While most players are currently on vacation or cooling inside to avoid the heat wave, NYPC members were on the front stage during the Bastille Day Pétanque Events 2011.

The famous Bar-Tabac -Robin des Bois  Pétanque tournament on Smith Street in Brooklyn held on Sunday July 10th 2011 was won by Jean-Pierre, Xavier and Malek!

Congratulations to them! They will be participating to the 2012 Marseillaise à Pétanque, a prize offered by Ricard!!! Air fare and Hotel included!

On Thursday July 14th 2011, Cercle Rouge hosted its second edition Bastille Day event and petanque tournament

Once again the NYPC members won! This time, the “Brooklyn boys”, Bill, Joel and Bert won against a team from LBNY. They also got a lot a prizes from Ricard and d’artagnan !

Both Pétanque Events were directed by Thierry who is very grateful to Bernard and Gilles who helped a lot in the success of both events!
